Elizabeth Steatham et al (1835-1913)

On Elizabeth Steatham's gravestone in James Bridge Cemetery, Darlaston, we have Elizabeth, her Sister Sarah Steatham (1839-1928), and their Cousin Thomas Steatham (1865-1936).

This is a very interesting group and here is a background to their lives.



Elizabeth Steatham (1835-1913), she was a daughter of one of Robert Steatham's four remaining Sons; Thomas Steatham (1803-1873).

Both Elizabeth and her Sister Sarah Steatham (1839-1928), never married.

Also buried with them is their first Cousin once removed, Thomas Steatham (1865-1936), who is the Son of Moses Steatham (1845-1886), whose grave is also in James Bridge Cemetery.

Elizabeth died (1913) first - her Will reads as follows:-

This is the Last Will and Testament of me Elizabeth Steatham of The Croft no 6 Great Croft Street [this is the house that Henry George Steatham died] Darlaston in the County of Stafford Spinster.

I devise my three dwellinghouses and premises nos 10 11 and 12 in no 2 Court High Street ( formally called Cock street ) Darlaston aforesaid which were left to me by my Father and my dwellinghouse and premises no 6 Great Croft Street Darlaston aforesaid in which myself and my sister Sarah Steatham reside to my said Sister Sarah Steatham for her life she keeping the same in repair and insured against loss or damage by fire.

Subject to the life interest aforesaid in my said before mentioned four dwellinghousess. I give all property whatsoever and wheresoever unto Henry George Steatham now residing at no 33 Bellott Street East Greenwich Kent absolutely and I appoint him sole Executor of this my Will.

In Witness whereof I have hereto set my hand this fourth day of June one thousand nine hundred and thirteen.

Signed by the said Elizabeth Steatham the Testatrix as and for her cast Will and Testament in the presence of us present at the time who at her request in her presence and in the each other have hereto subscribed our names as witnesses the word "four" having been interlined between the twelfth and thirtieth lines of this my Will.

On the twenty third day of July 1913 Probate of this Will was granted at Lichfield to Henry George Steatham the Sole Executor. Effects £5594 1s 9d.

£5,594 in 1913, in todays money would be the equal to £687,762 - Calculated using this Link. What an interesting fact this is.

Notice the mention of Henry George Steatham.

Sarah died (1928) next - her Will reads as follows:-

I Sarah Steatham of the Great Croft Street Darlaston in the County of Stafford Spinster hereby revoke all former wills and testamentary dispositions made by me declare this to be my last will.

1. I appoint Florence Farr of Granville Maney Hill Road Sutton Coldfield and Thomas Steatham of 212 Walsall Road Kings Hill Wednesbury Estate Agent ( hereafter referred to as "my trustees" ) to be EXECUTORS and also trustees of this my will And I declare that the expression "my trustees" wherever used throughout this my will shall where the context so admits mean and include the said Florence Farr and Thomas Steatham and the survivor of them or other trustees for the time being of this my will whether original or substituted.

2. I bequeath to my maid Sarah Ann Steatham if she shall be in my service at the time of my decease the sum of thirty pounds free of legacy or other duty.

3. I devise and bequeath the whole of my real estate and the residue of my personal estate whatsoever and wheresoever unto my trustees Upon trust to sell call in and convert the same into money with power neverless in their absolute discretion to postpone the sale calling in and conversion in and conversion of the whole or any part thereof for such period as they shall think fit and to stand possessed of the proceeds of such sale calling in and conversion and of my ready money and of any property for the time being remaining unconverted Upon trust after payment thereout of my funeral and testamentary expenses and debts and the legacy hereby bequeathed and the duty thereon for the said Florence Farr the said Thomas Steatham and Henry George Steatham of 15 Hadrian Street East Greenwich London SE10 in equal shares as tenants in common.

IN WITNESS whereof I have hereto set my hand this twenty seventh day of March one thousand nine hundred and twenty five - SARAH STEATHAM - Signed by the said testatrix Sarah Steatham and acknowledged by her to be her last will in the joint presence of us who at her request in her presence and in the joint presence of us who at her request in her presence and in the presence of each other have hereunto subscribed our names as witnesses - Wm VANN - B F NICHOLLS ) Clerks with Messrs Slater & Co Solicitors Darlaston.

Died 12-Jan-1928 Probate London Proved 21st March 1928 to Florence Farr Spinster & Thomas Steatham Estate Agent Effects £948 8s 7d.

£948 in 1928, in todays money would be the equal to £63,456 - Calculated using this Link. What an interesting fact this is.

In 1864 a Miss Sarah Steatham gave 5 shillings towards the cost of replacing the Ruby windows in St Lawrence Church Darlaston.

Notice the mention of Thomas Steatham, and the mention again of Henry George Steatham.
